How to Check If ChatGPT Recommends Your Business

It takes about 3 minutes to find out whether AI is helping or hurting your business. Here's exactly how to check.

Step 1: Test ChatGPT

Go to chat.openai.com and type these prompts, replacing the brackets with your actual business info:

• "Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?"
• "Tell me about [your company name]"
• "Compare [your company] vs [a competitor]"

Screenshot every response. If your business doesn't appear in the first prompt, that means when your potential clients ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, they're being sent to your competitors.

Step 2: Test Google AI Overviews

Go to Google and search for your service + location. If an AI Overview appears at the top (a box with an AI-generated summary), check whether your business is mentioned or linked.

Google AI Overviews now appear in a significant percentage of searches. If your competitors are in those overviews and you're not, you're losing visibility every day.

Step 3: Test Perplexity

Go to perplexity.ai and ask the same questions. Perplexity always cites its sources, so you can see exactly which websites it's pulling information from. If your website isn't being cited, it means Perplexity can't extract useful information from your site.

Step 4: Test Gemini and Claude

Repeat the same prompts on gemini.google.com and claude.ai. Each AI platform has different data sources and different ways of evaluating businesses. You might appear on one but not another.

What to Look For

Pay attention to three things:

1. Are you mentioned at all? If not, AI doesn't know you exist — this is the most common problem.
2. Is the information accurate? Sometimes AI knows about your business but describes it incorrectly — wrong services, outdated info, or confused with another company.
3. Are your competitors mentioned? If they are and you're not, they've already optimized for AI visibility.

What to Do If You're Not Showing Up

The most common reasons businesses are invisible to AI:

• No structured data (schema markup) on the website
• No FAQ pages answering real client questions
• Service pages with generic language instead of specific details
• Incomplete Google Business Profile
• Inconsistent business information across platforms
